CIDOC CRM-EH Ontology

As an outcome of STAR and DELOS activities, we have produced an extension to the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CIDOC CRMISO 21127:2006 standard)), which models the archaeological excavation and analysis process (CRM-EH). The archaeological modelling was directed by Keith May from English Heritage. The work on the CRM-EH was prompted by a need to model the archaeological processes and concepts in use by the English Heritage (EH) archaeological teams, to inform future systems design and to aid in the potential integration of archaeological information in interoperable web based research initiatives.

The specialisation of the CRM schema for the archaeological excavation and analysis processes undertaken by English Heritage had only existed previously on paper. Working with May, an implementation of the CRM-EH environmental archaeology extension was produced by Glamorgan as a modular RDF extension referencing the published (v4.2) RDFS implementation of the CIDOC CRM. In addition other useful modular extensions, addressing implementation issues, are available as separate RDF files, including the specification of inverse relationships between CRM properties (not explicit in the published RDFS implementation but useful for STAR). The exercise raised various other practical issues including modelling of literal properties, specification of unique identifiers, property sub-classes and mapping to controlled vocabularies.
